Not long ago I was really into the whole voting thing. “It’s your civic duty!” I would exclaim. “It’s how your voice gets heard!” and “It’s your only power in a representative republic!” I was hopped up about politics; Our state was in the middle of a contentious gubernatorial election and I had just become a full-time public sector employee. Social media was a gladiator pit. Friends were all up in each other’s grills. And I was right in the middle. I had, after all, donated $20 to the Obama campaign in 2008.
